Celebrate Movember with GroomU

Movember 2012 has officially begun and to celebrate this taschetastic time, GroomU, one of the UK’s leading providers of men’s grooming products, have created a guide to the month where men do their best to grow a mo’ that would make Tom Selleck proud. The idea behind the charitable event is to grow your whiskers and groom them into a marvellous moustache to help raise money for Prostate Cancer UK. If you missed the start of the month, don’t fret; it’s not too late to become a Mo’ Bro. Simply start with a clean shaven face and let your upper lip do the rest. Movember Bake Sale at Riverside Wine Festival

This year we were once again able to host a bake sale at the Riverside Wine Festival. It was a huge success! We were totally cleaned out. We had a ton of baked goods provided by the extremely awesome Sweet N Flour and The Sugar Tryst. Everything was delicious and our table was packed. Huge thanks to the bakes and everyone who helped out. Check out more photos from the event here.

Movember Jax at Pecha Kucha 11

We had a chance to talk about Movember even more at this month’s Pecha Kucha. It was loads of fun and it really helped us spread awareness about what Movember is really all about.

Wondering what Pecha Kucha is? Well, it’s a quick-paced presentation where each person only has 20 slides lasting 20 seconds each. Other presenters included Kelly MacDonald who talked about her solo trip across the US, Violet “The Awful Waffle” Skinner who talked about the Jacksonville Rollergirls & Kenny Harper about visiting Europe! Huge thanks to Stephanie Soden and Tiffany Manning for putting this on.

Movember Takes Over Art Walk

One of our best Movember events so far has been the Movember Art Walk! Our main event was the Movember Art Show at The Art Center II at 229 Hogan Street where there was great art, free beer courtesy of Intuition Ale Works and music by Dennis Eusebio. The show consisted of about 26 artists that participated with about 34 pieces altogether! Many thanks to all of the artists, Dennis Eusebio, Intuition Ale and all of the helpers we had to help run the show.

We had our Movember Info Booth & Craft Table in Hemming Plaza where Art Walk patrons were able to make their own mustaches and learn a little about what Movember is all about.

The sweet tooths could enjoy the Movember Bake Sale outside of Snyder Church courtesy of master bakers The Sugar Tryst and Bee Ewe Eye.

Art Walk patrons could also buy some mustache-themed art from the AIGA Atomic Sketch event in the Old Library.

We even had a street team to spread the word on all the awesome stuff going on put together by the Jacksonville Rollergirls passing out Movember materials & mustaches. Many thanks to all who participated, The Art Center for lending us the space and Downtown Vision for helping us put this whole thing together. You can check out all the photos from the event here.

ABOUT MOVEMBER
Mo, slang for moustache in Australia, and November come together each year to form Movember, a worldwide charity working to change the face of men’s health — literally. The rules are simple, Mo Bros start Movember 1st clean-shaven and grow a moustache for 30 days. The stache becomes the “pink ribbon” for men’s cancers and the way by which awareness and funds are raised. Mo Sistas can also collect donations online in support of their Mo Bros. Over $42 million was raised last year — US donations benefit the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG, the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Starting Movember off right!

Our first official Movember Jax event was the Movember Shaving Party at Dos Gatos! It was a great way to start the month off right. We had electric shavers out front to help us get in the Movember mood and look. Mo Bros were lined up to get trimmed by stylist Ronny King and to get their before and after photos taken by the very talented Daniel Goncalves. Huge thanks to both Ronny and Daniel for offering their services at a great start to Movember!

And on top of that, It was also karaoke night at Dos Gatos so anybody who sung a song got a free shot! Many thanks to Dos Gatos for allowing us to be rowdy and make a mess out front and to Anthony for setting everything up. Check out the event photos below or the album here.

Movember Jax loves Wild Zero!

Our second event to kickoff Movember was the Wild Zero showing at the 5 Points Theater. It was such a great turn out! More than 70 people showed up for the shenanigans and we raised $265 from ticket and concession sales! It was definitely a fun time.

This was a movie for people who love zombies, rock n roll, drinking beer & Movember! If you missed the event and don’t know much about the flick, Wild Zero is about Ace, a wannabe rock star, is on his way to seeing his favorite group Guitar Wolf when a strange thing occurs . . . aliens invade and people start returning to life as flesh-eating zombies! Enlisting the help of his rock ‘n roll blood brother Guitar Wolf, Ace and the members of the band get entangled in many misadventures with crazy rock managers in very tight shorts, transsexuals, naked women shooting guns in …the shower, and bloodthirsty zombies ready to tear them apart.

Leather jackets, loud over-modulated music, laser guitar picks, motorcycles, muscle cars, and LOTS of fire! And to make things even better, there is drinking game to go with the movie! So while you’re watching, you drink every time someone drinks, combs their hair, says “Rock n Roll,” fire shoots out of anything, something explodes, or a zombie’s head pops!

Check out photos from the event below or here.

Movember Craft Night

Already the second week in with Movember and I’m just now posting photos from the first Movember Jax event, the Mo Sistas Craft Night. It was definitely a great start to kick things off and everybody had a great time. The ladies made their mustaches for the month from patterns and materials thanks to Emily with Anomaly and Underbelly. Many thanks to her and Sterling for helping us put that together and giving us a place to drink beer and get crafty! You can find photos from the event here. Check out more photos below.

Movember Art Show Call to Artists

The Mo, slang for moustache, and November come together each year for Movember. This event challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The opening will be held at the November Art Walk on November 3rd from 5pm-9pm at the 229 Hogan Street Studio. Art pieces are due by October 27. I’ll have more information regarding drop-off locations soon.

Sound Awesome? Of course it does. If you have questions, contact Sean Collins at sean@jaxbeard.com or at 904.718.6947.

Full Details:

  • Art must have a mustache theme.
  • Art is due by October 27, 2010
  • *Update* Art can be dropped off at the space after 6:30 pm on Wednesday through Friday as well as during the day over the weekend. If you have any questions, you can call Sean at 904-718-6947.
